Aakirkeby

Bornholm's only inland town

Unlike Bornholm's other larger towns, Aakirkeby doesn't sit on the coast — it lies inland, in the heart of the island. That makes it the only one of Bornholm's larger towns without its own harbour, and after Rønne and Nexø the third-largest town on the island. Life here centres on the small market square and the massive church at its heart.

The Aa Kirke

The town takes its name from Aa Kirke, a Romanesque church built around 1150 from pale ashlar stone. It's one of Bornholm's largest and oldest churches, and in medieval times its presence underpinned Aakirkeby's prominent status. Inside, the limestone font carved with runic inscriptions — the work of the Gotland master mason Sigraf — ranks among the island's most important works of art.

NaturBornholm and more

On the edge of town, NaturBornholm is an interactive nature centre bringing Bornholm's geology, wildlife and natural history to life — a good option on a rainy day or with children in tow. Vintage car enthusiasts will also find a small further attraction at the Bornholm Automobile Museum.

Its central location makes Aakirkeby a practical base for exploring every part of Bornholm.
