Olsker Round Church

A few kilometres south of Allinge stands Olsker Round Church — officially Sankt Ols Kirke, dedicated to the Norwegian saint-king Olav. Built around 1150, it's the tallest of Bornholm's four round churches at roughly 28 metres, and the most elegant from the outside: the narrow rotunda with its tall conical roof stands visibly on a hilltop and guided sailors for centuries as a seamark.

An impregnable refuge fortress

The Romanesque building comprises an apse, a rectangular chancel and the three-storey rotunda. Inside, ring-vaults resting on a strikingly slender round granite pillar carry the two lower storeys. The third storey was purely a defence level: nine large openings for shooting and dropping projectiles, originally topped by a flat roof with a parapet walkway — the beam holes for the wooden defensive gallery are still visible beneath the wall crown. The building was considered impregnable; today's conical roof was only added in the 16th/17th century.

Stark, fortified, striking

The interior is deliberately stark and, with few windows, rather dark — the parish describes the feeling of the space as "shelter in God's strong hand". Faded traces of the original limewash murals survive on the ceiling. The font predates the church itself, the pulpit dates from the 16th century, and the ceramic altar from 1950. In the churchyard stands a freestanding two-storey bell tower: a square stone base about three metres high with a timber-framed upper level.

Getting there and practicalities

• By car via Lindesgårdsvej 1 in Olsker; limited parking and public toilets at the church.

Is it worth a visit?

As a photo stop and a quick break on the way to northern Bornholm, absolutely — the silhouette on the hill is unique, and a visit costs no more than a small donation.
