Events & Festivals on Bornholm

Bornholm packs a surprising number of events into a year – from a democracy festival that draws half of Danish politics to the northern tip, to a food festival at a fishing harbour. Summer is clearly the main season, with June to August concentrating most of the festivals. If you're planning a trip around a particular event, book early – ferries and accommodation get tight during festival weeks.

Folkemøde – Denmark's democracy festival in Allinge

Folkemøde is Bornholm's best-known event and in 2026 runs from 11 to 13 June in Allinge on the island's northern tip. For three days the small harbour town turns into an open stage for political debates, talks, interviews and discussions – parties, organisations, companies and media fill tents, squares and backyards across the town.

The surprising part for visitors: the festival is free and open to everyone. As a guest you don't need to register – just find a spot and listen in. Around 60,000 people descend on Allinge each year, stretching the small town to its limits. If you plan to travel that week, book accommodation and your ferry crossing well in advance – capacity sells out fast and prices climb.

Even without Danish, a visit is worthwhile: the atmosphere among harbour, stages and makeshift cafés is unique, and the programme ranges from hard politics to music and culture.

Sol over Gudhjem – the big food festival

Just over a week after Folkemøde, on 19 and 20 June, the next highlight takes over the harbour at Gudhjem: Sol over Gudhjem. The event bills itself as Denmark's largest food festival, built around a cooking and dessert competition in which top chefs create dishes from regional ingredients in front of the crowd.

Around it grows a large market with stalls, tastings and live entertainment right on the water. More than 20,000 visitors arrive each year, filling the already picturesque harbour town to capacity. The market itself is free to enter; tables at participating restaurants can be booked. With Folkemøde and Sol over Gudhjem only days apart in 2026, the second half of June becomes a natural event cluster – the busiest stretch of the year for a festival-focused trip.

Summer music – jazz in Allinge and Wonderfestiwall

In early July, the Allinge Jazz Festival brings live music to Allinge. It traditionally runs in week 28, which in 2026 puts it around 6–12 July. The volunteer-run festival spreads roughly 30 to 40 concerts across town – some free and outdoors, others ticketed in halls and cafés.

The musical highlight of the year is Wonderfestiwall, from 13 to 16 August at Slotslyngen in northern Bornholm, close to the Hammershus castle ruin. The open-air event ranks among Denmark's most scenically set festivals, and in 2026 its line-up of around 30 acts includes Melanie C, The Cardigans, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, Kesi, Infernal, Katinka and Tessa.

• Tickets – A weekend pass for the three festival days (Thursday to Saturday) costs up to DKK 1,795 plus fees. Children aged 0–9 go free, and a discounted children's ticket is available for ages 10–14.

Sports events – trail runs, a long walk and a cycling race

Bornholm's rugged north coast is a magnet for endurance athletes. The Salomon Hammer Trail loops around Allinge and the Hammerknuden headland and is considered one of Denmark's toughest trail runs. Both 2026 editions are confirmed:

• Winter edition – on 31 January 2026, with distances from 50 miles down through 63 km, 42.2 km, 21.1 km and 10 km, plus an ultra-orienteering category.
• Spring edition – on 2 May 2026, doubling as the Danish short-trail championship, with 50 miles, 50 km, 25 km, 17 km and 8 km distances.

Registration runs through sportstiming.dk or hammertrail.dk. If walking is more your pace, summer brings two very different island circuits that are easy to confuse, since both are called "Bornholm Rundt":

• Bornholm Rundt Marchen – a three-day, 125 km walk from 3 to 5 July 2026, organised by the Gangforeningen ROTNA. The route splits into three stages of roughly 30, 45 and 50 km, starting in Rønne with overnight stops in Allinge and Nexø. Register via bornholmrundtmarchen.dk.
• Bornholm Rundt by bike – a timed 103 km circuit of the island on 23 August 2026, starting at 8:00 from Rønne. Entry fees range from around DKK 210 for early registration up to DKK 350 for late entry. The 2026 edition is already sold out – a sign of how far ahead this one fills up.

Arts, crafts and culture

In 2017, Bornholm was named a World Craft Region by the World Craft Council – the first region in Europe and the first island anywhere to receive the title – and it shapes the island's cultural calendar. The season opens in spring with the Bornholms Kunstrunde (art trail): on Ascension weekend, 14–16 May in 2026, around 59 artists and craftspeople open their workshops and studios free of charge. 2026 marks the tenth anniversary, marked by a joint exhibition at Svanekegaarden (24 April to 25 May). Late summer brings the big umbrella programme: the Bornholm Craft Weeks (Craft- & Kultur-Uger) run from 4 to 20 September 2026 – 17 days with more than 200 cultural events, including Bornholms Kulturuge and the Litteraturens Folkemøde literary festival. Workshops, exhibitions, readings and open studios are spread across the whole island.

Christmas markets and winter

Once festival season ends, winter revolves around Advent. The largest market is Bornholms Julemarked at the harbour in Nexø – Bornholm's biggest Christmas market, with free entry. In 2025 it opened Friday to Sunday on the Advent weekends (Fri 15:00–19:00, Sat 11:00–19:00, Sun 11:00–17:00); a similar pattern is expected for 2026.

• Svaneke – At Svanekegaarden in Svaneke, a smaller, covered market runs on the Advent weekends in a cosy old merchant's courtyard.
• Aakirkeby – As AakirkeJULEby, the town turns into a Christmas town from the first Sunday of Advent until just after Christmas, with tree lighting, a Christmas train, elves on bikes and a visit from Julemanden (Denmark's Father Christmas).

The sports calendar also stretches into winter – the Salomon Hammer Trail's winter edition in late January crosses snowy rock at Hammerknuden. If you're visiting in the cold season, check the weather first, since the events and ferry schedule both thin out considerably.

A side note for anglers: the former Trolling Master Bornholm – a boat-based salmon and sea trout trolling competition starting from Tejn – was permanently discontinued in 2024 due to threatened Baltic salmon stocks. A smaller successor, the Trollingtræf Bornholm, now takes place at Easter; an exact 2026 date wasn't confirmed at time of writing.
